Why the Church investigates carefully
Baptism is not a symbol to treat casually. It is new birth and entrance into the Church. The Coptic Church therefore asks whether a previous baptism can be recognized or whether Baptism is needed as part of reception.
One Lord, one faith, one baptism.
What you should bring
If you have a baptism certificate, bring it. If you remember the church, denomination, words used, or method, share that with Abouna. Do not be embarrassed if you do not know. The priest can help you sort through it.
The priest may also ask whether there was immersion or pouring, whether the baptism was done in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and whether the community that performed it confesses the Holy Trinity. These are not bureaucratic details. They concern the meaning of Baptism itself.
Reception into the Church
Reception into the Coptic Orthodox Church may involve catechesis, confession, Baptism where needed, Myron, and Communion according to the priest’s and bishop’s guidance. The pastoral goal is to receive the person truthfully, with confidence, and under the care of the Church.
The Church handles the question carefully because there is one Baptism, and because entering the Church should not be left uncertain. A person should therefore bring the facts, accept the priest’s direction, and let the Church receive them in the proper order.
