How are the saints alive with Christ?

On this page

The saints have died bodily, but they are alive with Christ. The Church remembers them as living members of the one Body of Christ who await the resurrection with us.

For He is not the God of the dead but of the living, for all live to Him.

Luke 20:38 · NKJV

Death in the light of the resurrection

Christian death is real, and the Church mourns honestly. Yet death does not destroy communion with Christ. The saints have departed from this life, but they live to God, and the Church remembers them in the hope of the resurrection of the body.

This is why Coptic worship speaks of the departed with prayer, remembrance, and hope. The faithful do not treat the saints as imaginary helpers. They are members of Christ’s Body whose lives were completed in faith.

Why the Church asks their prayers

If the saints are alive in Christ, asking their prayers is part of the Church’s communion across heaven and earth. The request is not worship. It is a request for intercession from those who stand before God.

Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight.

Hebrews 12:1 · NKJV

Why martyrs matter

Martyrs witness that Christ is stronger than death. In the Coptic tradition, the memory of the martyrs is part of how the Church understands faithfulness, courage, and resurrection hope. Their lives teach the faithful to confess Christ with patience and joy.
