How does the Coptic Orthodox Church receive the Bible as the Word of God?

On this page

The Coptic Orthodox Church believes the Holy Bible is the inspired word of God and receive it with reverence in the life of the Church. Scripture is read in the Liturgy, prayed in the Agpeya, sung in hymnody, taught in catechesis, and used for repentance and spiritual formation.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

2 Timothy 3:16 · NKJV

Scripture in the Church

The Coptic Orthodox Church does not treat the Bible as an ornament beside liturgy. Every Divine Liturgy includes readings from the Pauline Epistle, Catholic Epistle, Praxis, Synaxarium, Psalm, and Gospel. The Church’s year is shaped by biblical readings, feasts, fasts, and the life of Christ.

The Bible is also received inside Holy Tradition. That means Scripture is interpreted within the apostolic faith, the Creed, the Liturgy, the fathers, and the sacramental life of the Church.

Reading Scripture faithfully

A faithful reading asks what the passage teaches about Christ, repentance, prayer, holiness, and life in the Church. The Bible is given for salvation, not for private argument or detached curiosity. The Church reads it so the faithful can know God, confess the truth, and be healed.

The Coptic tradition also expects Scripture to be prayed. Psalms fill the Agpeya, verses shape the Liturgy, and biblical language forms the Church’s hymns. The word of God becomes the language of worship.

Why tradition matters for the Bible

Holy Tradition protects Scripture from being isolated. The same Church that copied, received, read, and prayed the Scriptures also teaches the faith by which they are understood. For Copts, loving the Bible and living inside the Church’s Tradition belong together.
