Let my prayer be set before You as incense.
What the bow means
The bow is a humble reception of the prayer and blessing passing through the faithful. People are not bowing to smoke as an object. They are responding to a liturgical action that says, “Let our prayer rise before You.”
The smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God.
The priest’s censing of the people also shows that the faithful are part of the Church’s offering. The incense does not stay only at the altar; it passes through the church as a sign that the whole worshiping body is being gathered into prayer.
Receiving the moment
A slight bow of the head is enough. The meaning matters more than perfect timing. The gesture teaches humility, prayer, and the place of the whole parish in the Church’s offering before God.
This is why the action is reverent but simple. The faithful receive the blessing, remember that their prayers rise before God, and return their attention to the service.
